If you’re wondering what this Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 is all about – nzgirl to the rescue! We spoke to Tracey Donaldson, nzgirl, self confessed motorsports fanatic and one of this year's Bathurst reporters for TV 3's live coverage of the event, for the full low down...
Is it all just promo girls and petrol heads? Well I'm a Bathurst virgin this year, so I'll have to get back to you on that! But I've been told there's LOTS of boys, lots and lots of boys....
What makes Bathurst so exciting? Firstly - the amazing racing - the circuit throws up EVERY kind of obstacle, blind corners, steep hills, fast straights and walls that are "right there'. There’s very little margin for error. But also the diehard fans who spend the week camping on the hill.
They party all night doing everything from BBQs to fireworks, lighting fires and holding smash up derbies. Camping there isn't for the faint hearted.
Who should we be looking out for? Well Lowndes and Whincup (Team Vodafone) are hoping to make it their thrid Bathurst win in a row and are definite favourites. But as far as backing the hometown boys, a few Kiwi drivers have done well there, most notably Greg Murphy. He's won there four times, and Paul Radisich, he’s been second twice...
How long does the race go for? ALL day Sunday - can you hack it? Its 161 laps, or about six hours long. If you can make it to the last 30 laps you're in with a real chance of winning. It becomes an all out sprint. So if you can’t manage 6 hours in front of the telly, at least tune in for the last hour!
What speeds do the cars get up to? The average speed is about 150ks an hour, but the top speed is about double that. How they can even see at that speed is beyond me - the vibration is crazy.
What’s better, Holden or Ford? Oooh I couldn't possibly answer that. I'd have to get an unlisted phone number!
If all else fails, who’s hot in the eye candy stakes? Well beauty is 'in the eye' and all that, but my fav is Paul Radisich by far. If I was 10 years younger then it would definitely be Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup...
