Change the World...

When Change the World for Fifteen Bucks landed in the office we were all pretty inspired! For such a small, colourful little creation, this book is packed with heaps (50 in fact!) of ways to change the world through easy steps and small actions that make you feel great...

Not to get all Ghandi on you, remember that YOU have the power to change the world! We chatted to the team and other famous nzgirls to help inspire you to use your everyday actions to make change...

If you're looking for more ideas, check out Change the Word for Fifteen Bucks...

Action 2: Decline plastic bags whenever possible

It’s excellent to see more and more people finally using cloth carry bags for their shopping. I always keep a spare bunch of them in my car since I’m forever stopping off at our local organic shop or butchers. If I have to go to the supermarket I always have them with me. And you still end up with the odd plastic bag at home somehow which gets recycled as bin liners etc. It’s an easy way to do a little bit to help our planet. Plastic sucks!!!

Action 45: Give your number to five people in your street
I just love this page, its tactile, good looking and the truth. We all benefit if we live in community. If you don't want to give your neighbour your number, have you thought about moving? I really want to plant myself in the neighbourhood where I live, (we've just moved and the loss of two of our old neighbours was keenly felt). Some stories I've heard about great neighbours make me jealous...so I am going to try and be one, so I can have some. Hmmm. "Hello! Anyone home?"

Action 11: Get fitter feel better
Walking is great! Whether round the block of your neighbourhood, along a beautiful beach or through our many reserves and bush! It is just as pleasurable if you go by yourself, I like to be nosey and see what the neighbours are growing in their front gardens, or with a partner/friend. You don't have to even 'power-walk' to feel the benefits...a gentle walk can still get the body feeling more alive.

Action 3:  Read a story with a child
Read Change the World for Fifteen Bucks with the kids. We practice most of the things written about but it’s good for them to know other people think about all these important things too. I honestly believe if we create a sense of awareness in our children, they are the future and the world will become a better place.

Action 35: Write to someone that inspired you

How easy is it to say thank you to someone? Like that amazing teacher that inspired you to reach for the stars?  However, how many of us tell those people: "Thanks you totally inspired me". I actually wrote to my primary school and some of my teachers a couple of years ago. They were so touched they read my letter out in assembly, shared it with every staff member that was there when I was at school (they tracked them down!) and printed it in their newsletter. Really if these people give you inspiration, the least you can do is tell them that they have done so. I cannot recommend this enough.

Action 17: Try watching less TV
Rearrange your pictures. Make a cocktail. Write a song. Apply make-up. Swim in a dam. Wear gold. Revert to childhood. Stay up all night. Change your hair colour. Turn left instead of right. Streak. Massage someone. Dust. Shave something off - anything to avoid TV! I chose this one because I know I watch too much TV and I would like to watch less! This was so encouraging and quirky - some good ideas in there, I might have to try them next time I find myself stuck in front of the TV blobbing watching nothing for no apparent reason!

Action 37: Only fill the kettle with the water you need

It’s a total pet peeve of mine when people fill the jug right to the top with water, even though they only need enough for one cup of coffee! It takes forever to boil and is such a waste of time and energy. According to the book if everybody only filled the kettle with the water they needed, we could save enough electricity to run all the street lighting in the whole country!

Action 38: Let at least one car in on every journey

I've been inspired by Anya's act of sending her inspirational people a letter of thanks, but one of the other actions I like is adopting a bit of driving karma - it doesn't take much to let a car nip out in front of you in a queue. Provided they give you a grateful smile and appreciative wave (when the tables are reversed, I like a spirit fingers wave!), you'll feel all the better for it and next time when you're in a situation and you're "that person" (Anya knows what I mean) indicating to get into the opposite lane, you won't feel like such a dick - it's your right after all to claim a bit of that karma back baby!
