We all love a big burger or slice of pizza, but these often come loaded with fat and sodium.
Here are some easy recipes to try at home and although it will take a little longer than a trip through the drive through window, you won’t be disappointed by the taste! Burger and Fries Personally, I think homemade burgers beat fast food burgers any day! Made with lean mince, these patties are lower in fat than fast food burger patties. Add lots of salad ingredients to your burger to pack with extra nutrients. Baking your own fries also makes the meal much healthier than fast food as I’m sure you know deep-fried chips are very high in fat. Makes around 6 - 8 burgers depending on how large you make the patties. IngredientsFor the burger patties: 1 finely chopped onion 1 clove garlic 300g lean beef mince ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce 1 egg 3 - 5 tablespoons of breadcrumbs Salt and pepper Burger buns
Suggested salad fillings: Lettuce Tomato Cheese Beetroot Onion Mayonnaise Packet of store bought frozen fries (try McCain Superfries Straight Cut for a healthy option) Instructions Preheat the oven and put in fries to cook as per the packet’s instructions while you make the burger patties Combine the patty ingredients together and mix well. Add more breadcrumbs if necessary so the mixture is held together enough to make patties. Roll the mixture into patties and cook in a frypan over a medium heat until cooked through. Toast the burger buns and add salads and condiments of your choice. Serve with your oven fries and tomato sauce. BBQ Chicken and Bacon PizzaThis is an easy and tasty way to make pizza with a lot less fat than your traditional store bought one. Traditional pizza bases from fast food outlets tend to be quite oily and the toppings are loaded with processed meats and loads of cheese. Using wholemeal pita pockets as a base and Edam cheese means this pizza is higher in fibre and much lower in fat than traditional pizza. Makes 2 pizzas Ingredients 2 wholemeal pita pockets BBQ sauce 3 rashers of lean bacon, sliced into bite size pieces 4 chicken skewers, grilled until cooked 5 mushrooms, thinly sliced 8 sun-dried tomatoes cut in half Grated edam cheese Spread the pita pockets with BBQ sauce. Pull the cooked chicken off the skewers. Spread the chicken, bacon, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes evenly over the pita pockets. Sprinkle thinly with the grated edam cheese. Add a swirl of BBQ sauce on top for some extra flavour. Bake in the oven at 190 degrees for 10 -15 minutes. Serve with a side salad. Nicola Graham Love being healthy and active?
