How to Get Rid of Evil Cellulite

You’ve tried on last year's bikini and realised you’ll either have to wear a wetsuit to the beach this summer or find a miracle cure for the cellulite rash that has spread all over your thighs and bum during winter.

But never fear, 95% of women experience cellulite too. Although this may be a small comfort, you’re still not in any rush to buy your summer wardrobe without getting it sorted first!

We’ve put together some tips on how to beat the “orange peel” demon and help you look hot in your bikini this summer!

What is it?
Cellulite is actually just a fancy name for collections of fat that push against the connective tissue beneath a person's skin, which causes the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and look lumpy.

How do I get it?
Although many people associate cellulite with being overweight, there are plenty of other factors that contribute to the “orange peel” effect. These include stress, lack of exercise, poor diet, smoking, genetics and female hormones (damn them!).

How do I get rid of it?
Whatever the cause of cellulite, it's important to know that there aren't any miracle products, treatments, or medicines that can make it go away completely. BUT…there are some things you can do to reduce and make it less noticeable!

1. Exercise
Exercise is a sure way of reducing its appearance and toning up your wobbly bits! Combining cardio e.g. running, walking and swimming with strength training e.g. weights will help you achieve this.

Exercise 1: This first exercise is aimed at improving circulation, toning and tightening the back-of-thigh area. Kneel down on the floor. Tilt your body forward so that your elbows also touch the floor. You should now have formed a kind of arch. Straighten your back. Lift one of your legs up behind you. Let it be in a straight line with your back. Now slowly lift it higher so that it forms an angle with the floor. By doing this, you’re using the hamstrings which run from the bottom of your pelvis to just below your knee.

Exercise 2: Lie on your stomach on the floor. Bend your elbows, and rest your head on your arms. Feel both hips touching the floor. Making sure your hip bone is still on the floor; slowly raise your left leg. Hold that position, then point and flex your foot four times. Lower your leg. Repeat 6 to 8 times. Change legs and repeat. Do the whole routine once or twice or more.

Exercise 3: Sit on a sturdy chair that doesn’t have wheels. Bend your knees at 90 degree angles, and rest your feet on the floor. Place a pillow between your thighs. As you squeeze the pillow between your legs, exhale, as if you were trying to squeeze the stuffing out of the pillow. Breathe normally and hold for one minute. Release. This works on your inner thighs.

Exercise 4: This exercise works the outer thighs and hips. Sit on a sturdy chair, the same way you did for Exercise 3 (above). Place your palms on the outside of your knees. Push your knees outward against your palms as if you were trying to push your palms away, all this time keeping your arms and palms stationary. Press inward with your hands at the same time, thus preventing your thighs from pushing them outward. Hold this position for one minute while breathing normally.

2. Diet
Cleansing the body and removing excess toxins may help improve your skin's appearance and reduce your tendency toward cellulite. What types of foods should you be eating?

Organic fruits and vegetables are excellent foods for cleansing your body and helping eliminate stored toxins. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help reduce the damage inflicted on our bodies by free radicals (like those in smoke and alcohol).

Here are some of the most beneficial and nutrient packed fruits and vegetables:

  • Blueberries and blackberries
  • Cherries
  • Mangos
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries and raspberries
  • Cranberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Apples
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Fennel
  • Bell peppers
  • Carrots

Also cutting back on alcohol and drinking lots of water will help flush out toxins.

    3. Creams and potions
There are hundreds of anti-cellulite creams on the market promising to firm your skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Massage is also a way to improve the circulation and reduce cellulite. You could combine an anti-cellulite cream with massage if you want to see faster results. More products are being produced with cream and massage rollers in one so keep an eye out for this time saving invention!

    4. If all else fails… a tan!
If worse comes to worse, get a tan! A nice golden brown tan will
    hide any pasty lumpy bits!
