Exercise & Your Personality Type

Popular Sanguine
The Popular Sanguine’s motivation is to have fun. When it comes to exercise they like to do it group style. Problem is sometimes there is so much catching up that no exercise happens! These people need variety, they get bored quickly. They get excited by the latest fad and they are usually the ones buying all the exercise gadgets off the television infomercials. Whether they open the boxes is another story! Popular Sanguines love the quick fix, short term, instant results solutions.

When looking at nutrition they tend to associate food with socialising. They love entertaining and have a tendency to overeat. In other words they are so busy having fun, laughing and talking they haven’t realised they’ve just eaten the whole plate of hors d'ouerves! They are not necessarily good at planning meals or thinking ahead, therefore they grab inappropriate snacks at the last minute once they realise they are starving.

Popular Sanguines need to:
  • Choose an exercise programme filled with variety.
  • Find a personal trainer or partner you can be accountable to. Someone who can keep you on track and help you be reasonable about your goals and time frame.
  • Start slowly. Set attainable smaller goals and work up to the bigger ones. Avoid overdoing it and burning out quickly.
  • Make small positive changes in your diet and stick to them. Never cold turkey on anything. Stick to the programme.
  • Take time to include relaxation and visualisation. Centre yourself and focus some quiet time just for you.
  • Have healthy snacks in the car or in your bag for when you are on the run. Things like almonds, cashews and sultanas make a great snack.

    Powerful Choleric
    Our Powerful Choleric friends are the impatient ones. They want an exercise regime that is quick, effective and produces results instantly. Don’t bother trying to have a conversation with these people while they're exercising, they’ll be too focused and will only see you as a distraction. Powerful Cholerics find it best to exercise first thing in the morning. They find it a waste of time if they have to get dressed and ready twice in one day. They need to be challenged and stimulated. However, they often have unrealistic goals and beat up on themselves when they don’t achieve as much as they would like.

    They see food as a way to get rid of hunger pangs, so they can get on with life. They often eat on the run or while working, talking or driving. They can’t be bothered making up new recipes or trying new things as they don’t have the time.

    Powerful Cholerics need to:
  • Create a realistic plan and schedule set times to eat and exercise.
  • Be patient and kind to yourself and honour your progress.
  • Alternate your activities to create enough challenge and stimulation.
  • Prioritise time for stress relieving activities such as walking, yoga or massage.
  • Plan your meals and follow suggested menu ideas.

    Perfect Melancholy
    If it’s a detailed comprehensive programme filled with research and back up, then the Perfect Melancholic is happy. These are the people who want to get it right and often follow a plan to the last detail. They want the information first, all the right equipment and the right clothes and gear before they embark on any programme. It is essential they let go of the perfectionist in them and start. Perfect Melancholics work well with a partner or coach who keeps them motivated and positive.

    When it comes to food they can be picky. They scour menus forever to make sure they choose the best meal but in turn will savour every mouthful. They like to plan and pay attention to detail. Dinner parties with these people take on a whole new meaning. The evening will be perfect (even if it makes them sick planning it!).

    Perfect Melancholics Need To:
  • Work out a plan and know exactly where and when your food and exercise schedule will take place.
  • Relax and enjoy learning new things. Don’t worry about getting it right every time
  • Focus on the positives and your progress.
  • Reward yourself.
  • Use your organisational skills to plan ahead and prepare your food in advance.
  • Be gentle on yourself and enjoy the occasional indulgence.

    Peaceful Phlegmatic
    Our dear friend the Peaceful Phlegmatic wonders why everyone is so obsessed about their health and nutrition. ‘Just relax, enjoy life and stop stressing’ is their motto. Everything in moderation is what these people believe. They like simple, easy to follow, step-by-step programmes and don’t like to over commit to anything. They are motivated by rest so the best reward they can offer themselves is a spa, massage or sleep if they have to workout! Peaceful Phlegmatics aren’t interested in building up a sweat at the gym. They tend to prefer exercise programmes like yoga, walking or stretching.

    When it comes to food and nutrition they tend to have great digestion. This is usually because they are such slow eaters. They are fairly relaxed about most things and especially love food they haven’t had to prepare! They are great at indulging.

    Peaceful Phlegmatics Need To:
  • Find enjoyable and creative ways to move everyday!
  • Find a buddy who can help motivate and inspire you. Avoid another Peaceful Phlegmatic as you may motivate each other to rest before the workout has begun!
  • Find an exercise that extends you but don’t be bullied into or pressured into doing something you really don’t want to do. You won’t last long otherwise.
  • As the famous Nike slogan says ‘Just Do It!’. Overcome your procrastination!
  • Make dietary changes slowly. Just one change at a time.
  • Go shopping with a list. You may get sidetracked.
  • Choose healthy snack alternatives to the typical TV junk ones.
  • Celebrate the successes – even the small ones.
