Netball, the sport of what feels like a billion rules – you can’t run with the ball, you aren’t supposed to physically contact another player and sometimes, it can feel as though you are constantly being penalised throughout the entirety of the game.
At times, it can be enough to drive you permanently insane! But then you remember it’s the passion and drive that the sport requires of you that keeps you playing every season.
Typically considered the Kiwi girls' sport, netball has most likely played a role in your childhood at some point. But have you ever considered getting back into it?
Sure, the thought of those frosty Saturday mornings and having to dig out your old trainers may be a daunting idea, but the rewards that netball offers definitely outweighs the freezing temperatures of winter!
Why play netball? Netball isn’t the girly, delicate sport that it is sometimes perceived as. When played competitively, it can be a game of aggression, speed and a constant reminder of how important your team mates are for offering support. However, the versatility of netball becomes more apparent when played socially, as then it is a game of light hearted fun and a great way to maintain your fitness over winter. Giving it a go is what it’s all about and the friends that you are guaranteed to make in the process will last a lifetime.
What will I need? Shoes! These are the most important as well as most valuable pieces of equipment that you could ever own. Specially fitted netball shoes are your best bet for avoiding any of those pesky ankle injuries that have a tendency to plague players. Any sports apparel or sports shoe shop will have all the tools and knowledge for fixing you up with the best shoe possible. This will ensure maximum comfort, protection from injury and consequently provide you with the ability to enjoy the game! A good sports bra is also a must-have. There is nothing worse than running around on the court only to find that you aren’t adequately supported!
How do I get involved? There are plenty of netball clubs throughout all regions of New Zealand, with teams ranging in age from under - seven to forty plus. Look out for registration days in community notices and bulletin boards or simply head down to your local club to ask all the questions and begin your sporting adventure!
So, why not get into it? Netball is an exhilarating, fast paced, rewarding sport. It allows you to make new friends, develop your agility and fitness not to mention mental sharpness.
Coaching younger girls and passing your own experiences is also another option if you're not up for playing anymore. It’s an awesome feeling to know that you are responsible for a group of young girls extending themselves and gaining confidence. Once you start playing, get your own support crew together to cheer you on at the sidelines and you will find winter the most rewarding of all seasons!
