Challenges For May

With New Zealand music month upon us again there’s no better time to release your inner rock chick and get down and moshing to some good ol’ home grown tunes. Here’s a few ways you can show your support and get involved in the music scene with this month’s challenges...

Disclaimer: nzgirl will not be liable for any smashed guitars and trashed hotel rooms.

Tame
  • What easier way to support NZ music than to tune in, sit back and relax to your new favourite radio station – Kiwi FM. This task couldn’t be simpler, just branch out from your regular station, hear all your favourite NZ tracks and discover some great new ones from some of the country's up and coming acts. There you have it; you’re practically a talent scout. Find it before it’s cool because that’s so much cooler.

  • You pass them on the street every day, so in the spirit of NZ Music Month why not throw a busker a buck? Chances are some of these guys are the future faces of NZ music and they’re working their butts off to make it, so get down to the roots of things and help them out.

    Intermediate
  • You are now required to get out of your arse, turn off your radio and venture out into the world for a taste of some real live and cranking New Zealand music. What better way to celebrate Music Month than hitting the town for some rock n’ roll antics. There are great gigs on every weekend, if you're in Auckland leave the waterfront for the 16-year-old girls with their fake ids and head up to K-Rd or The Kings Arms where the real action is. If getting down at a gig isn’t usually your scene just think of all the hot, shirtless guys in the mosh, now really, who could say no?

  • Learn to appreciate music, real music. It’s now time to trace back the roots of where it all began. I’m not talking about taking music appreciation classes here, just a bit of research. Become a real music connoisseur and extend your musical knowledge to that outside of this week’s top 10. Check out www.ehow.com for some tips on appreciating practically any type of music under the sun – jazz, blues, country, the list goes on...

    Challenging
  • Take a leap over the fence and become one of those musicians which we talk about so dearly. That’s right; it’s time to learn an instrument. Recorder lessons when you were in primary school don’t count as a musical background, so branch out a little and find your instrument of choice. There’s much to be gained from learning an instrument. It’s expressive, it’s an art form and it’s another great thing to add to your list of talents.

  • Now that you’ve got your instrument down it’s time to start a band. What better way to celebrate NZ Music Month than being part of the cause for celebration. Starting a band is no easy feat but in the wise words of Shihad “I will not live and die without a sound”. For details on starting a band check out the 'How To' section on nzgirl later this month.

Play it loud, play it proud - rock on Kiwi music!
