Can’t find a thing in your wardrobe that you want to wear? Or simply overwhelmed by all the clothing that your wardrobe holds? We have the ultimate guide to cleaning out your wardrobe that will make dressing a joy not a chore… This will take some time…This isn’t just a “wardrobe cleanout” it’s the ultimate of wardrobe cleanouts, and like other things which are ultimate this is bigger and better than you would have previously guessed. What you need to do is set some time aside for it, and some room because you will need plenty of both. Step one: Pull everything out of your wardrobe That’s right I said everything. You need to take everything out of your wardrobe; some find it easier to pull it out in sections (all tops, all pants, all dresses etc) but i'm a fan of taking everything out and putting it on a bed or something. Step two: Start sortingYou need to sort everything into piles, this is where the grey area starts. When I tend to do this I sort into three piles, things I wear, things I don’t and lastly things that no longer fit me. However things you wear and things you don’t wear are really good starting points. Step three: Ask some questions Unless you are doing a wardrobe clean up you are less than likely to be so hands on - this is the perfect time to ask some hard questions. Ask yourself why you have so many tops and no pants? Why are all your dresses black? And how long have you owned this? Take note of things that still have tags on them and ask yourself – why is this so? Face to face with your wardrobe now is the time to ask the hard questions! It will help you figure out alot of your bad shopping habits. Step four: Sort your sortingIf you wear it that’s great, hang it up and put it back. Nothing to see, hear, no worries at all. But what you need to really focus on is that pile of things you do not wear – why is that? Is it that something doesn’t fit quite right? Or maybe you never could find the right thing to wear it with? Whatever the answer to your question now is the time to rectify (take to your tailor for example) or cut your losses. You can cut your losses in two ways, give away or sell. Remembering that if you choose to sell then the proceeds can be used to fill gaps in your wardrobe. Step five: Identify gaps and fill them It’s not enough to have a pile of clothes that you wear and a pile that you don’t, if there are items in your 'I do not wear' pile that remain unworn simply because you don’t have a belt or a basic tee then you have a gap that needs filling. Identifying where the holes lie in your wardrobe will mean you have a more comprehensive look ongoing. Anya Merryfield
