Roadtest: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive Epilator

Summer is just around the corner, that means warmer temperatures, more beach time and less clothes. Yes ladies, it’s almost time to whip those tights from your legs and bare them to the world in bathing suites, short shorts and cute minis…

If your legs are a little furry thanks to the cold winter months (the one time when you have an excuse for hairy legs – at least they keep you warm!), then the thought of baring them to the world might be a little scary…

So what’s the best way to remove all that hair and make way for silky, smooth skin? One of the hottest trends in Europe right now when it comes to hair removal is epilation. This method involves a little machine (so you can do in the privacy of your own home, all by yourself!) which plucks hairs directly from the root, and can remove up to seven times more hair than waxing! Intrigued, we decided to give the new Braun Silk-épil Xpressive a little roadtest of our own...

What the Braun Silk-épil Xpressive promises/features:
  • Features patented Hair Lift technology that lifts, loosens and gently removes hair – even short of flat lying hairs.
  • Hair is removed from the root so stays smooth and stubble-free for up to four weeks.
  • Rechargeable version – providing up to 40 minutes of epilation.
  • Pre epilation wipes – to make the experience smoother and easier.
  • New flexible head – can move up to 15 degrees forward and back to follow the contours of your body.
  • Improved active massage attachment – to help minimise discomfort.
  • Is fully washable.

So, did the Braun Silk-épil Xpressive deliver on its promises? Read on for the nzgirl verdict…

Anya, Fashion and Beauty Manager
I’m the kind of girl that always jumps on the next beauty bandwagon, so with every new hair removal product released you better believe I’m trying it. That said I’ve always come back to the same method of hair removal, getting my legs waxed for $60.00 a pop. And whilst it’s pretty effective, it’s also pretty time consuming and money eating. So when the epilator arrived on my desk I was a bit dubious – it sounded too good to be true. I use this thing and never have to drive half way across town and wait for my waxist again? Where do I sign up!

The first night I took it home sat on my bed and started doing my legs, I’m the kind of person that finds waxing her own legs painful – but this was a breeze. The great little light showed up every hair meaning I didn’t miss a spot, and the whole thing was over and done with in record time without fussing with creams or wax or lotions. The results were amazing; my legs were smooth and hair free without the strange redness and sensitivity that plagues me post wax. For someone like me who has fair skin and dark hair paired with sensitive skin the epilator is really a great option, offering you the hair removal results of waxing without the issues associated with it.

I’ve never tried an epilator before, I’m pretty lazy when it comes to hair removal. The Silk-épil Xpressive comes with a big manual that looks a little daunting, but once you have a flick through you see there are only a few pages in english, with very simple instructions. The pack also comes with a range of epilator heads for you to choose from, depending on whether you want to do your legs, armpits or even face, and if you’re a total novice like me there’s a beginners head to soothe you into things. Yay!

Using the pre-wipes was fun (and they smelt so nice!), but I did get a fright when I turned the epilator on - it’s super loud! I started with small strokes (I was scared!) and it did feel a little strange - think multiple tweezers plucking at your skin. It hurt a little, but after a few strokes you definitely get used to it. I loved the light feature on the epilator which glowed directly above the areas I needed to go over, so no patches were missed! I especially loved being able to go over my knees (always the spot I miss when shaving), and love the idea that you can use it without water, so it’s totally convenient and portable. If you’re lazy like me, the Silk-épil Xpressive is probably a much more time saving hair removal technique than shaving – your silky, smooth skin can last up to four weeks! And how are my legs? Smoother than a baby’s bottom!
