We're super excited about the boys from Franz Ferdinand heading our way for Rhythm and Vines 2008. Liselle was lucky enough to get the inside scoop from the lads themselves here...
Apparently we New Zealanders have a bit of a party rep according to Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy. It’s this fun loving kiwi attitude that keeps them coming back with their soft spot for this country even leading to their agreement to play at this year’s Rhythm and Vines festival.
They’ve never played a new year’s gig before and the last time they tried to it ended in disaster (seriously intense – someone ended up beheaded) but they’ve always wanted to play on the day. From being on the road and away from his lovely wife, to some new tunes and nasty old stealing cars habits, the very charismatic and sometimes, due to his Scottish accent, hard-to-understand Nick indulged me in some NZ schmoozing and grooving. What appealed to you about the Rhythm and Vines festival? It’s in New Zealand! We just want to come back to New Zealand and that’s what was offered to us. Can we expect to hear much new material? Yeah! Well, we’ll play as much as you can handle. We want people to have a good time that’s the main thing. Just playing new songs, it’s interesting but it might not be as much of a party you know? So I think we’ll play like five or six new songs maybe... How does your new material compare?
I think we’ve slowed down a little bit but it’s still really danceable. It’s a real dance record. It’s gone from like a cocaine habit to more like a heroine addict (laughs…a lot). What other acts are you looking forward to checking out?I’m not actually sure who’s playing! I really want to check out the New Zealand acts – that’s why I’m there as well. How does a NZ crowd compare?
I think they are similar to a Scottish crowd actually. Well I know they like to drink you know as well, that helps, and if you can just forget about yourself and go for it - that’s what New Zealanders can do I think. What’s your most memorable New Year's? We’ve never played at New Year's Eve you see, and we wanted to give it a go. We tried playing once in Edinborough and it got rained off, the whole thing, the whole stage collapsed and I think someone got beheaded as well which is pretty scary… The whole stage collapsed on someone, we didn’t find out about that till the next day though. So yeah that was pretty memorable... Quick QuestionsWhat three words spring to mind when you think of New Zealand? Sheep, hills and love their drink, maybe more a good time I spose... It’s weird because I’m really close to the Beer Festival in Munich and a lot of New Zealanders go there; there’s actually a tent just for kiwis... It’s the maddest tent and it goes absolutely crazy, there’s people hanging from the chandeliers you know. It’s absolutely mad. Quirky interests? I don’t know how quirky it is, I think it’s more square - classical music for instance, I love classical music and, yeah it’s really square actually, I love going to the theatre, going to art exhibitions.
Guilty Pleasure? I used to love stealing cars when I was a kid but I don’t do that anymore
