On Wednesday night the Vector Arena opened up for the first time to host the New Zealand Music Awards. It was an awards show nz style – think jeans and kicks along the redcarpet (some even went barefoot!), a spine chilling opening with a kapa haka group (a la Tiki Taane) and a whole lot of booze, fun and of course, music!
Big winners of the night were the Flight of the Conchords (unfortunately though they were not in attendance, they're cracking it in the US) – those hilarious boys took home all three of their nominated awards; best album, best group and breakthrough act, plus shared the award for international achievement with Savage (whose single ‘Swing’ has just reached Gold status in the US!). Opshop nabbed the highest-selling album, highest-selling single and single of the year for ‘One Day’ and ‘Maybe’ won radio airplay record of the year!
Crowd fav, Tiki Tanne took out best roots album after delivering a spine chilling performance at the beginning of the night with kapa haka group Te Pou o Mangatawhiri.
For a bit kick ass nzgirl action, Anika Moa, Elemeno P’s Lani Purkis, Fur Patrol’s Julia Deans and drummer Greta Anderson formed together to create a one band dubbed the “The Fast Women”, to pay tribute to the Straitjacket Fits, winners of the New Zealand Herald Legacy award. It was without a doubt – amaze!
When it came to the red carpet, our picks for best dressed were Annabelle Fay, who looked gorgeous in Stella McCartney and Tiki Taane, who looked swish in a pin stripe suit. Scribe was dressed in red and black, supporting both the Crusaders and the Labour Party (he says Helen Clark is his idol!), and Awa from Nesian Mystik was showing off his new fully shaved head (apparently a fund raising effor for the 'Nesian Mystik fund'?!). We even managed to ‘flossie-fy’ a few of the stars as they strutted down the red carpet, with some of the Nesian Mystik boys, Young Sid and Francis from Kora all donning a bring pink flossie.com sticker! Love it!
