nzgirl Picks: Love lessons we've learnt from the movies

When it comes to love lessons, you don’t always have to learn something first hand to become all the wiser.

You can learn through others mistakes (our preferred method!), and here at nzgirl HQ we’ve all learnt some of our most valuable lessons when it comes to love through the movies. Check out our favs here…

Isla, Flossie Content Producer
Movie: Dirty Dancing
Lesson: The bad guy is sometimes the good guy
Dirty Dancing teaches us that sometimes the bad boys are really the nice guys in (hot, ripped jeans, dancer’s body) disguise - so always trust your gut feeling about someone. Even more importantly it taught us that off the shoulder jumpers are hot, ballroom dancing is sexy when there’s a Swayze involved and to never, ever put Baby in a corner.

Nadia, Campaign Executive
Movie: The Notebook
Lesson: If it’s meant to be, it’ll be
Not only is this the best movie in the world but it also taught me something and gave me hope! Though they were madly in love, they separated for a while due to the circumstances (her family not liking him and shipping her off and faraway) but, they found each other again and lived happily ever after. It gives me hope that you can leave your first love and do your own thing for awhile e.g. travel, and one day you will end up together again – if it’s meant to be, it’ll be!

Ramarea, Editor
Movie: Sex and the City - The Movie
Lesson: Don’t forget about him!
Carrie teaches us that a relationship is about two people, not one! She goes all overboard with her wedding planning and falls more in love with the idea of a wedding, than marrying Big himself. And what happens? He freaks out and leaves her at the isle! Noooo! This has taught me to not get selfish – it doesn’t do anyone any favours…

Anya, Fashion and Beauty Manager
Movie: Roman Holiday
Lesson: The girl doesn’t always get the guy
Audrey Hepburn teaches us that sometimes when you really dig someone it doesn’t necessarily mean you can be together. In the film Audrey Hepburn, a princess, and Gregory Peck share a “moment” but she knows at the end of the film that her alliances are with her country, and they can not be together. Although every inch of you wants Gregory Peck to run back and be with her, you know that sometimes things just can’t be. Even if it hurts a lot – great breakup advice.
