Roadtest: Your Perfect Sleep Routine

Looking for a no fail sleep routine for you and baby? Research shows that a constant, caring routine can result in improved infant sleep!  We got nzMum Simone and her gorgeous baby Wheriko to roadtest it for us.

Based on this information, Johnson's have developed their own Bedtime Routine to help Mums send their little ones off to sleep...

The Three Step Routine

1: Bathing your baby, using Johnsons Baby Bedtime Bath
2: Gently massaging your baby, using Johnson's Baby Bedtime Lotion
3: Sending your baby quietly off to sleep, by reading, singing or snuggling

Check out the full guide here.

The Roadtest
Ever the fans of a good roadtest to trial such bold claims, we at nzgirl wanted to see how it works first hand, so we enlisted an nzMum Simone and her gorgeous six month old daughter Wheriko, to put the Johnson's sleep routine to the test.

Where did you hear about the Johnson's Bedtime Routine?
My mum always used this routine for us when we were little and it helped getting us all into a routine and into bed earlier, so she initially helped me to get started with it.

What happened the first time you tried it out with Wheriko?
She was very young at the time, only a week old so she hadn’t started enjoying her bathtime yet so she didn’t like it too much. She did seem to like the massage straight away and was quite a bit more relaxed afterwards the very first time.

How long have you been implementing it?
Ever since then we have been using this routine and Wheriko has grown to love it, so we haven’t changed anything.

Had you tried any other method of getting Wheriko to sleep?
Yes, but only rocking and nursing her to sleep. They didn’t seem to work as well. Since we started doing this when she was very young we haven’t tried that many other routines.

Have you told other Mums about the routine? What has their reaction been?
Quite a few of my cousins have young babies and they too use this method so they are already firm believers.

Have you noticed any positive spinoffs in Wheriko’s behaviour?
She sleeps longer and is always more relaxed after the bath and massage. She also looks forward to the routine and gets excited when she hears her bath being run. She enjoys her routine so much that she will lets us know when it is time for it! And if she isn’t given it she doesn't settle as well. I think that the routine is a good way to get her ready for bed and she is so used to going to sleep after it and sleeping for the whole night. There is no need for endless rocking and a battle to put her to bed.

What do you as an nzMum like about it?
It is a nice way to end the day and wind down. Also she loves it so much it makes it such a fun thing to be doing with her. I like that there is a lot of hands on, one-on-one time throughout it and it makes it so much easier to put her to bed.

What do you think Wheriko likes about it?

She absolutely loves her baths, she will splash and talk and play and when getting her ready for it she is giggling and smiling. She likes being sung to sleep and often will join in humming as well until she falls asleep.

What's your favourite part of the routine?
Bathing Wheriko. It’s so cool to see her having so much fun and enjoying it so much. Also it’s pretty awesome when she is tucked up in bed early and without a fuss.

How do you find the Johnson's products help with the routine?
The Johnsons Baby Bedtime Bath has a nice relaxing aroma while in the bath. Also the Johnsons Baby Bedtime Lotion is good to massage Wheriko with as it’s smooth and soft on her skin. It always leaves her smelling beautiful too, my Nana even commented that she always smells beautiful!
