Ahh…the dreaded hangover! You know the deal, you’re out and you’re just having so much fun that you keep downing the drinks, even though you said you were on your last one four shots ago...
But then, you wake up the next morning feeling like you’ve just been hit a by a bus, complete with a pounding headache, swollen fingers, and a bone dry throat. Eeesh!
Although the only magical way to ensure that you don’t wake up with a hangover is, surprise, surprise, to not drink, we have some tips to help ease the pain and get you through your grogginess with as much ease as possible!
Why all the pain? Most of the pain you feel when hungover is due to dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic, which speeds the loss of water from your body. So, with each drink, you effectively lose more water than you take in. This causes headaches and that dizzy feeling. Nausea, vomiting and indigestion are caused by that nasty liquor irritating your stomach lining. Add to this the fact that so often when you drink, it’s matched with a night of crazy partying and little sleep. This means you’re body organs are not only disrupted by all the alcohol, but also by a lack of sleep and energy.
So what can you do to ease the pounding pain? Here are our top five tips…
1: Sleep The best way to stop yourself from feeling the awful side effects of binge drinking is to sleep it off! Sleep as much as you can to help rest and reenergize your poor body. Be sensible and organise your boozy nights so that you don’t have a crazy day planned for the morning after. The last thing you want is to have to show up for work bright and early, looking and feeling like a lifeless zombie!
2: Hydrate Because alcohol is a diuretic, it’s so important to make sure that you rehydrate your body afterwards. Drink as much non-alcoholic and fizzy liquid as possible – we recommend good ol’ water, sports drinks such as Powerade and juice to replenish any lost essential vitamins and minerals.
3: Bounce back with Berocca
Pop a powerful multivitamin such as Berocca or Hairy Lemon to help boost your body with extra minerals and vitamins, to make up for all the ones lost in your drinking spree. These fab little babies contain everything you need to help your body recover, rebalance and reenergize! If you’re really serious about raining on your hangover’s parade, take one with a glass of water just before you go to bed (yes, while you’re still drunk!) and you’ll wake up feeling a whole better!
4: Go greasy
A good ol’ greasy fry up or meal can help you to feel better. Not only will it fill your tummy, but if you go for eggs, they are packed with cystenine, which is said to mop up the destructive chemicals that build up in the liver when it’s metabolising alcohol. So if you can stomach it – a big breakfast is the way to go.
5: Reach for pain relief If you’re in need of some fast pain relief, reach for a pain reliever such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Although these pills will help to stave off your hangover headache, they can cause negative side effects on your liver when mixed with alcohol. So be wary, and don’t over do it! One or two is enough!
