July is all about luxury here at nzgirl, and we think there is no greater luxury than your health! We asked one of our fav and very gorgeous nzgirls, Joe Cotton (who also happens to be Jenny Craig’s Weight Loss Ambassador) to share her top five tips on how to look and feel great!
1: Do exercise you actually like!
Exercise doesn’t come naturally to me - I sometimes think that I’m allergic to sport. However, I do love to dance and sing! When I’m performing with my band, I’m perfectly happy to dance up a storm on stage (well, as much as my costume allows me) and I don’t even consider it to be a workout because I’m having so much fun while I burn calories.
My advice is to find a sport that you love doing – even if you walk to a local shopping centre in the weekend instead of driving, take up a casual dance class or ride a bike along the waterfront with your man. Do a workout that’s fun for a change and mix it up.
2: Mating This tip is not quite as dodgy as it sounds. Pair up with a mate who will help you stay motivated. For us busy girls it’s a great way to catch up with girlfriends while you work up a sweat together, and you’ll be surprised how quickly time flies while you’re catching up on the latest goss.
3: Portion is the new black
I love to eat, I really do! I’m not a nutritionist, but I know what tastes good and makes me feel good too. Make sure you have a well balanced diet and include all the things you love too – just keep an eye on your portion sizes. I’m an Ambassador for Jenny Craig, so I’m lucky, I get it all done for me. But I have learnt a lot from Jenny Craig about the correct portion sizes for meals and the benefits of having smaller, more regular meals (and my favourite part – snacks!).
4: Reward yourself
With my wedding looming in 2009, I’ve devised a reward scheme for myself when I reach my goals (much like the ‘star chart’ you had when you were little). Map out some ‘baby step’ goals and give yourself a bit of a treat when you reach them. Your goals don’t have to be weight loss focused but can also be around exercise, health and not eating chocolate. There’s nothing like a massage, manicure or a pair of shoes to motivate.
5: It’s all good
I’ve pretty much come to terms with the fact that I will always have to be a little bit careful about what I eat. I just keep on keeping on. One week you might have a shocker (my Jenny Craig consultant has seen me throw a few tanties!) and other weeks you will be in fine form. After you eat that tonne of lard, give yourself a good kick up the backside, pick yourself up and resolve to be better next time!
