Change the cliché – diamonds aren’t a girl's best friend, her handbag is! Oh the beloved handbag - it’s a place to store all your treasured belongings, keep that iPod safe, stash your makeup and accessorise your outfit perfectly...
But what happens if it all goes horribly wrong, and your handbag gets accidentally destroyed, damaged or stolen?
Your handbag is kind of like your less demanding best friend, and like a best friend, sometimes we can treat them in undeservedly bad ways. This includes leaving your handbag on the seat of a café only to be swiftly swept away by an opportunistic thief, or dropping your Hermes Birkin in a gutter on a rainy day. When we asked around the office about the topic of ‘handbag destruction' the amount of stories outlining handbags meeting beverages was more than a little worrying. Imagine the scenario, you're out with your girlfriends at a bar when all of a sudden a rather excited and intoxicated dancer, accidentally spills their glass of champers right into your fabulous and fully packed handbag. How does your bag and all its contents survive this brutal damage? We decided to give this situation a real life roadtest, by pouring a glass of orange juice into a fully packed handbag, to see how everything would cope. FYI ladies, beverage meeting handbag is not a friendly sight!
Our handbag contains...
Most nzgirl's carry around a digital camera, iPod (in a case), a makeup bag, a diary full of personal thoughts and important dates, and of course some perfume, mints etc... Anya pours the juice into her bag and mixes it around... Anya tips the juice out to prove how much liquid really did go in that bag! Even though our handbag didn’t seem to have a lot in it, to replace everything would cost over $600 and that’s excluding the actual bag. Eek! Whilst it’s easy to say that you wouldn’t put a drink in your bag, you can never say it won’t get wet in the rain or stolen. So how can you protect yourself and your wallet from such extreme heartbreak after accidents like these? Tips for Handbag Safety1: Insure The number one tip is to insure your handbag and its contents with AMI. You probably have never even thought about the amount of money and prized possessions you carry around with you every day. But if something was to happen to them, contents insurance can make replacing your treasures simple. AMI offer a range of insurance options that mean you won't be left empty handed if your handbag is accidentally damaged or stolen. Remember that claiming insurance can be so much easier if you present a receipt as proof of purchase. So every time you buy something precious, put the receipt away somewhere safe. Make sure you know or ask about the conditions of your policy, including your excess and the types of damage not covered, such as wear and tear. There is a minimum contents value that you must insure which varies under different policies so ask about this too. AMI Premier Contents Cover
- Under AMI Premier Contents Cover all items including your gorgie handbag would be covered at 'market value' except for the mobile phone which may be replaced (so if it couldn't be fixed, you would get a new one).
- Non-consumable items, such as the bag and camera would be covered at their 'market value'. This varies for different items, but generally the age, depreciation and condition of the item are taken into account.
- The cover for consumable items such as makeup, would be based on how much you had used them. So if you had an eye shadow that had only been used a few times and was ruined by an accidental juice spill, you would get a new compact. If it was half used, you would be reimbursed half of its original value.
- The excess for contents claims on the Premier Contents policy is typically about $100 - a relatively small price to pay for a bag and contents that would cost over $600 to replace, and keeping in mind that you might get a new mobile phone!
- Your premiums would not be affected by claiming either - bonus!
AMI Advanced Contents Cover
- This is the highest level of cover offered by AMI. Under Advanced Contents Cover all items would be replaced - so you'd get a brand new bag, phone, camera, makeup, packet of mints, regardless of how worn, used or old the items are! If you're accident prone this is probably the best option for you!

A waterproof makeup bag for your MAC lip-gloss and a waterproof camera and iPod holder are all essentials. If you have the kind of bag which has an open top – then safety pin the lanyards for your electronic goods into the inside of your bag or zip them away into internal pockets. Remember some types of damage, such as wear and tear, are not covered by insurance. Rain, heat and direct sunlight can cause damage and discolouration to your handbag so make sure you protect it from the elements. When you buy a new handbag, ask for tips to keep it in top condition. Many stores sell products to help care for leather, suede and other materials. 3: See Keep your handbag in sight at all times. This may seem obvious for bars and airports but this means at home too. Your little niece or nephew wont hesitate to rifle through your handbag. And unattended handbags and unlocked doors do not mix! Anya Merryfield
