There’s something sexy about the salsa - the movement, the boys, the outfits… It all just adds up for some pretty hot stuff. Factor in to this that it’s fun and easy to learn, and you have one pretty snazzy form of exercise!
So first night in. Everyone’s a little jittery and at first as we joke about our two left feet and hope that we don’t make arses of ourselves.
The fears are short lived as the class starts and we are greeted by the, dare I say it, rather good looking and almost stereotypically tall, dark and handsome salsa instructor. The class starts and fears are soon forgotten amongst intermittent perves and concentration on our first moves.
The class moves at a good pace. The initial moves are, thankfully, very basic and we’re given enough time to get our confidence up before having to jump in the deep end and partner up.
This is when things start to get funny. Like a form two social, everyone in the room is suddenly very afraid of the opposite sex. People gradually, and very awkwardly, start to find a partner but being the first class there isn’t quite enough boys (they promise to bring in more reinforcements for next time). Like the geeky girl left sitting on the bleaches I luck out for the first dance and instead go for some girl on girl action.
I wasn’t worried that my first sexual preference wasn’t available, because I was doing it (albeit a little gumbily) and I thanked my two left feet for co-operating and not making a complete and utter fool out of me. I also tried my best to avoid looking in the room length mirror at the risk that the previous statement was not entirely true and salsa-ed my little ass as hard as I could.
First song finishes and it’s back to the drawing bored to learn how to twirl. Again, we practice this by ourselves for a little while before finding a new boy (or girl) to try it out with. This time I was a bit quicker off the mark (as was everyone else) and nabbed the first male I could find.
Turns out I had stumbled upon a winner. Looking a bit spiffy in his tucked in shirt, black pants and shiny shoes, my new partner Sean was actually one of the boys from an advanced class. This was good and bad. Good he knows what he’s doing, bad I don’t. Spiffy Sean shows me the way and we’re soon twirling our little hearts out. We’re so good that the whole class stops to watch us and breaks out into applause when we finish.
Sexy instructor tells me he’s never seen a beginner so amazing and Spiffy Sean starts squealing with excitement that he’s found the girl to take to the salsa world championships. Not quite… BUT Sean did compliment me on my ability to talk and dance at the same time - what can I say, I’m a skilled little lady.
After my first salsa experience I remain convinced that this is a great, social way to exercise and have fun. The people are friendly, the dance moves are hot and it’s a pretty reasonable price as well. Check out the Latin Rhythm site here for a class near you.
