Luxury Food Swaps

Food, food, glorious food! We all like a treat every so often, maybe a little too often. If you’re going to have a treat or two, perhaps you would like to try a healthier alternative.

If you like a glass of wine in the evening, you could try swapping white wine with red wine. Red wine is thought to have health benefits that white wine lacks. Red wine is rich in the antioxidant reservatrol, which gives red wine its colour and may reduce your chances of developing heart disease. Enjoy wine in moderation.

Try swapping milk chocolate for dark chocolate or a Pinky. The darker the chocolate the higher its cocoa content. Cocoa is a rich source of antioxidants, which help reduce blood pressure and possibly LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol levels.
Alternatively, you could swap a bar of milk chocolate for a
Pinky, they’re low in fat and energy – good if you’re watching your waistline.

Switch your creamy mocha with full fat milk for a skinny cappuccino sprinkled with chocolate powder. A skinny cappuccino is a lower fat and sugar option, which is better for your figure.

Ditch the brie cheese with pastry crackers for yummy Philly cream cheese with rice crackers. Philly with water wafers or rice wafers are a yummy low fat alternative.

Swap a milk shake with a delicious banana and mango smoothie. Not only is the smoothie lower in fat and sugar but it’s full of potassium (good for blood pressure) and vitamins A and C (which are great for boosting your immune system). To make a mango and banana smoothie, just blend a banana four slices of canned mango, ¼ cup of ice, and ¼ cup of pineapple juice until smooth.

Swap a take-away cheesy meat pizza on a deep base for a veggie pizza on a light base. Or better yet make your own pizza
and top it with heaps of veggies! The veggie pizza is lower in saturated fat and kilojoules and is richer in vitamins and minerals.

Substitute a Magnum for a creamy fruit sorbet. Sorbet tastes almost like ice cream but with a lot less saturated fat and energy, which is good for your heart and figure. If you feel like a dairy treat, you could also swap ice cream for yoghurt. Yoghurt is lower in fat and sugar (which is better for your teeth).
