Anya spoke to New Zealand’s top hairdresser Mana Dave fresh from taking out the title of 'Hairdresser Of The Year' at the prestigious Hair Expo Australia.
Mana shared some fab tips for making sure nzgirls get the most flattering hair cut. From cutting by face shape, body shape and choosing the best stylist for you – who is better to pump for advice than the best?! Read on for Mana's expert advice...
So what we should be thinking about when it comes to face shapes?
In New Zealand there are really three shapes that we cut a lot for, round shapes, oval and heart shapes – for anything else you kind of mix up the rules.
Round
You want to lengthen and soften the face, so the cuts for you should lead the eye down or to the side. You can do a fringe if it’s a softened angle – so the sweep side fringe is a great choice. Longer lengths that end below the cheek bones and the chin are a good choice as well.
Oval
Well the ovals have it easy, they have the “perfect face” so they can do whatever! (Anya says: Damm them!)
Heart
The heart shape is wider at the temples and going down to a smaller chin, so you want to create more depth at the chin line to make the face more balanced. So a bob with a little volume at the bottom is a great cut.
What about Body Shape?
Once you get the cut right for the face you have to make sure you do it for the rest of the body. At Blaze we really believe its not about just a haircut, but more an entire look. It’s like wearing a hat, you have to make sure it matches the rest of the outfit; so you have to make sure you cut fits in the rest of you. Long straight hair is not the best look if you are straight up and down and having your hair stop at breast height is not the best if you want to not draw attention to them!
How Should nzgirls go about choosing a stylist?
They should find someone they mesh with, your going to be spending at least a couple of hours with this person so you should be able to talk to them! Communication is key, because you have to trust this person to know what you are talking about … and you have to be comfortable… So go for a salon that makes you feel happy and that you can talk to – that’s something we really believe in here.
What are your top tips for getting the perfect hair cut?
Take pictures! A lot of people feel really weird about taking pictures with them of what they want but they shouldn’t be. Stylists are usually really visual people so it helps them for you to have something to show them – that way they can really understand you! And have a clear idea of what you want. Your stylist can only give you what you want if you know what that is. It may mean having a longer consultation but in the end it’s what you have to do.
