What the nzgirl crew are listening to: Guilty Pleasures
We all have a guilty pleasure – you know, one of those songs you love but just don’t want anyone to know you love!
We asked the nzgirl team to open up and spill their fav guilty pleasure songs – from Celine to Bardot, there is sure to be a power ballad or poppy sing-a-long that you’ll secretly love too…
Isla, Content Producer My shameful song: ‘Angel’ by Shaggy Why it’s a guilty pleasure: It’s on my iPod and I love blasting it in the car, complete with sing-a-long (but I quickly flick past it if anyone else is in the car with me!). This is a total guilty pleasure because, while I’m singing my little heart out, I’m also doing the whole imagining-I’m-in-the-video-grinding-with-Shaggy thing - shame!
Bonnie, Commercial Director
My shameful song: ‘Dreams’, Fleetwood Mac
Why it’s a guilty pleasure: I know this is the music from my parent’s era – so I feel like I am a little late to the party. These are the songs my mum sung her heart at too in her late teens – it just seems plain weird that I could be enjoying them 30 years on. It’s one that I can put on repeat about 80 times. LOVE IT.
Melissa, Advertising Executive My shameful song: ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’, Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes Why it’s a guilty pleasure: This song has many fabulous memories for me of a holiday with my girlfriend a couple of years ago in Australia. We started singing it (well, trying!) one night and it became ‘our song’ for the trip. This progressed to us buying the Dirty Dancing album the next day and adding dance moves to our performance - much to the horror of our fellow companions! This song always makes me smile when I hear it, and who doesn’t like a good ol’ love ballad sing along?
Sarah, Art Director My shameful song: ‘Walking Away’, Craig David Why it’s a guilty pleasure: Because it just is! It was perfect on those days when dreaming of my crush I never had the guts to talk to! “I’m walking away, from the troubles in my life…” Oh, the troubled times!
Ramarea, Content Producer My shameful song: ‘Come on Over’, Christina Aguilera Why it’s a guilty pleasure: I love old school Christina, and this song is my fav sing-a-long when I’m with all my girlfriends. It’s seriously cheesy but it always puts me in a good mood and brings back loads of memories from high school - plus everyone always knows the words. It’s a guaranteed party hit!
Nadia, Account Executive My shameful song: ‘Poison’, Bardot. Why it’s a guilty pleasure: I should be embarrassed to say this, but I’m not! I la-la-love Bardot! Yes that’s right, the Australian pop group like True Bliss who don’t exist anymore (sad face). I no the words to the whole album, and my flatties and my friends probably do too now. What’s even better, is that my CD is signed - yay for me! I will have a piece of Sophie, Sally, Belinda, Tiffani and Katie with me for ever.

My shameful song: Celine Dion, ‘It's All Coming Back To Me’
Why it’s a guilty pleasure: Oh the choices! It would be remiss of me not to include a song that features in the shameful tape library I carry with me in my car. From the opening "da da da da da DUN" to Celine's soaring vocals in the chorus, this power ballad never fails to get me belting it out. The video's on a whole other level with the dramatic lightning strikes, bikie in leathers, Celine in her satin robe and gothic Wuthering Heights-esque mansion! It's so hard to resist and it's all coming back to me...
Anya, Beauty and Fashion Manager
My shameful song: En Vogue, ‘Don’t Let Go’
Why it’s a guilty pleasure: You’ve gotta love a song that is all about stalking someone! Throw in some sweet 90s dance moves and matching outfits, and you have some kind of magic going on! It’s a piece of 90s pop culture - at least that’s what I tell myself when I’m belting out “dooooont leeeet goooo” in the shower. I’m just waiting for the fall out from my punk and metal loving brethren... Eek!
Emma, Advertising Manager My shameful song: Bon Jovi, ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’
Why it’s a guilty pleasure: There’s a bit of Bon Jovi on all our mp3 players… Either out there for all to see or hidden in case someone happens upon your playlist – but there nonetheless! ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ brings me back to those crazy nights out on the town with all my friends! Ahh the memories…
